Why you should cook it in Instant pot?
The one main reason to cook sweet potatoes in Instant Pot is they won't turn soggy or mushy like the boiled ones.
They remain perfect moist and velvety unlike cooked in microwave which usually turns dry.
Hand off cooking! Just dump the potatoes in steamer basket or trivet, push the start button and leave. Instant pot does the job for you.
Instant pot steams them perfectly and they are ready in less than 40 minutes with natural pressure release.
The skin slides off without any effort or you can just scoop out the orange flesh and add to dishes or mash.
Honestly, cooking sweet potatoes wouldn't be any simpler than this! The easiest Instant Pot Recipes ever!
You can cook them in microwave as well as in pot on stovetop, but Instant Pot method is winner above all!
Step by step instructions
To begin with, rinse and gently scrub the sweet potatoes under running water.
Place the steel pot and switch on the IP. Add 1 cup of water into the pot.
Place the trivet or steamer basket and put whole sweet potatoes on top of it.
Close the lid and seal the pot with vent in sealing position. Press 'Manual' or 'Pressure Cook' and the set the timer to 18 minutes on high pressure.
Note : Select the Pressure Cook time as per the size of potatoes you will be using. I have used medium ones, for Small and Large Sweet Potatoes, please refer below to the FAQ section.
Once the IP beeps, let the pressure naturally which will take around 10-12 minutes after the beep.
Carefully open the pot and take them out using tongs. Let the sit for couple of minutes before serving.
Frequently Asked Questions
So, the cooking time differs depending upon the size of the sweet potatoes. "One size fits all" pressure cooking formula doesn't apply here.
For Small with 6 inches circumference : 15 minutes
Medium with 8 inches circumference : 18 minutes
Large with 10 inches circumference : 22 minutes
Very large with 12 inch circumference : 30 minutes
Follow the natural pressure release which will take about 10-12 minutes!
I have never pierced them before cooking them in the instant pot. You can skip this step for this method.
Yes! In fact steamed sweet potato is an excellent baby food option which you can easily make at home.
The only thing I would suggest here is to peel and cut in cubes and then steam them. Once cooked, cool and purée to required consistency and use.
Expert Tips
Use similar size sweet potatoes in thickness to pressure cook in one batch for same time and even cooking, I prefer using small to medium sized potatoes.
Place them in a stack for bulk cooking, but keep in mind to avoid over crowding.
I do not poke the potatoes before cooking, so you can skip that step. However you can make few pokes if you wish too.
Pressure cook the sweet potatoes as per the size you are using for batch. Time preference has been given above.
If they are very large in size, you can cut halve them put in the Instant Pot.
If only they are not done tender, then pop them back into the instant pot for 4-5 minutes.
Serving ideas
Simply, smear butter cube, sprinkle salt, pepper and enjoy! I love to sprinkle some fresh thyme as it goes amazing with sweet potatoes.
Drizzle some maple syrup with butter, cinnamon nutmeg and salt.
Looking for savory ideas? You can stuff some shredded chicken and top it with sour cream, avocados, cilantro and jalapeño.
Turn it into savory or sweet mash or stuff with Quinoa, chickpea, black beans with some Chipotle Ranch.
You can top it with tomato salsa or even a simple dollop of soup cream with chives and chilli flakes tastes great.
Or just top it with some dried cranberries, pecan nuts, honey and cinnamon, enjoy as a dessert.
Adding this steamed potatoes mash into the soups works great!
With any of the above variations you make awesome side dishes or simply make sweet potato casserole and enjoy it with family and friends for Thanksgiving.
Storing sweet potatoes
Cooked : It stays well in the fridge upto 7 days in clean airtight container.
Raw : Do not wash them if you want to store them as is for long time.
Store them in dry, cool and dark place of your pantry. You can wrap them loosely in brown paper and store. This way it stays well upto good 4 weeks.

- If you see, both the potatoes opened up beautifully in the middle while cooking. If it doesn't for you then, give a slit in the middle keeping the ends intact.
- Mash the potatoes using fork and serve as you like. We love to eat it with butter, salt, pepper and sprinkle of some fresh thyme.
