As all of us know, dal is an integral part of one’s meal in India. There are the variety of lentils which are prepared in a different way in every other household. Some prefer to cook dal with veggies like palak dal or Lauki ki masale wali dal or simple dal tadka yet rich like Lucknowi dal or Dal with meat like dal Gosht. My family love to have the variety of dal in their meals, one such preparation of which my husband and even my in-laws are very much fond of is Kali Masoor Ki dal. Kali Masoor Ki dal is the intensely delicious preparation of whole red lentils in tangy and spicy condiments and seasonings. This Dal is one of the most frequent preparation at my home. It pairs up extremely well with hot steamed rice along with papad, pickle, and salad on the side.This dals tastes amazing with hot naan. 1 cups, kali masoor (whole red lentil)
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 medium tomatoes, finely chopped
2-3 green chilies, finely chopped
1 teaspoon ginger garlic paste
1 teaspoon, chili powder
3/4 teaspoon, coriander powder
1/2 teaspoon, turmeric powder
1 teaspoon, amchoor ( dry mango powder)
1/2 teaspoon garam masala
1 sprig curry leaves
1 teaspoon, cumin seeds
Salt to taste
1 tablespoon oil
1 tablespoon ghee
Water as required
1 small onion finely sliced
1&1/2 tablespoon, oil
Clean and wash the dal well
In a pressure cooker, heat oil
Add cumin seeds and allow it to crackle
Add curry leaves and fry for few second
Add onions and fry until soft and translucent
Add tomatoes, ginger-garlic paste and saute on high heat for 2-3 minutes
Add chili powder, green chilies, turmeric, coriander powder, amchoor powder and mix well. Cook until spices starts leaving oil
Add washed dal and sauté on high heat for a minute
Add salt and enough water, mix well
Bring it to boil, cover and cook until done
Let the pressure release.
Open the lid, adjust the consistency of the dal as per the requirement. Check for salt. Put it back on the stove top and bring it to aboil.
Add garam masala powder, ghee and cook for 2-3 minutes. Switch off the heat.
Heat oil in small pan
Add sliced onions and fry until golden brown
Pour this tempering over the dal
Dal is ready to be served.
Dish out and serve hot with phulkas or naan, steamed rice or zeera pulao.
