Fish Bhurji is a delicious dish of scrambled fish seasoned with curry leaves, mustard seeds and spices. Fish bhurji is a dish that can simply be relished with parathas/phulkas or as side dish with dal-rice. For this recipe here, I have used Sea bass (bhetki) fillets, but you can also use king fish or bassa or any boneless fish you prefer. Personally, I love to cook this Fish bhurji in coconut oil, but you can opt for any refined oil for this recipe, If you are a fish lover, I bet you will fall in love with this simple yet extremely flavourful recipe of fish. In case if fillets are not available, you can also go ahead using normal fish cut, the only tweak needed here is fry to marinated fish, flake the fish and discard the bones. Let’s go through how I did it ….
Ingredients:-
For Marination:
500 gms, Fish fillet, cut in medium pieces
1/2 teaspoon tumeric
juice of one lemon
Salt and pepper
For Bhurji :-
3 medium onions, finely chopped
2 large tomatoes, finely chopped
1&1/2 teaspoon, garlic, finely chopped or crushed
1 teaspoon ginger, grated
2-3 green chilies, slit
1 teaspoon, red chili powder
1 teaspoon, coriander powder
1/4 teaspoon, turmeric powder
1/2 teaspoon, garam masala powder
2 sprigs of curry leaves
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
Salt to taste
4 tablespoon oil
Method:-
Marinate fish fillet pieces with the ingredients mentioned under marination
Cover and keep it aside for 10 minutes
After 10 minutes, heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan. Add marinated fish fillet and pan fry from both sides until just done
Take it off the heat and cool. Gently flake the fried fish with the fork
In another heavy bottom pan or kadhai, heat oil.
Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and allow them to splutter
Add curry leaves and green chili slit and fry for few seconds
Add grated ginger and garlic and sauté for a minute. Do not burn them
Add chopped onions and fry until soft and pink
Add tomatoes and sauté on high heat for few minutes.
Add red chili powder, turmeric powder, Coriander powder and mix well.
Cover and cook until masala (spices) is cooked well ( for 3-4 minutes)
Add flaked fish, salt, garam masala powder and mix well. Cook for another couple of minutes
Dish out and garnish with coriander leaves. Serve hot with plain parathas, phulkas or Kerala parathas and even with Dal-rice.
I tried this dish and it’s really yumy. I stuffed this fish bhurji in bread slices and made toaster sandwiches, it’s turn out well. Thanks for nice recipe.
